Tonight the K300 Race Committee Board of Directors decided by unanimous vote to postpone the 2025 Kuskokwim 300. The race, which was scheduled to start next Friday, January 24, will now begin on Friday, February 7.
Southwest Alaska has been plagued by limited snowfall and numerous warm-spells this winter, resulting in frequently poor trail conditions and hampering trail marking efforts. The current forecast for Bethel and checkpoint communities of Tuluksak, Kalskag and Aniak calls for 5 days of temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s leading into the middle of next week. This outlook made it impossible to determine whether there would be a trail that is safe for human and canine athletes come race time. Organizers felt that in light of the bleak forecast, a decision should be made to postpone before teams begin making the costly trip to Bethel early next week.
The Race Committee has been in touch with registered mushers in the days leading up to the decision to postpone and at this time, no racers have indicated an intent to withdraw as a result of the change.
No modifications to the race route are planned at this time. Not until trail marking crews are able to resume their work with a clearer sense of race-time trail conditions will such determinations be made.
In its 46 year history the K300 has been postponed several times due to extreme weather, in most cases for a day or two. Most recently, the 2021 race was delayed as part of a covid-mitigation plan.
We will continue to provide updates in the coming weeks at www.k300.org and through social media.
