Fordham University students visiting Bethel learn about dog mushing and the K300.
10 student from Fordham University, the Jesuit University of New York, participating in the Global Outreach (GO!) program are visiting Bethel this week. This GO! team is working with the Catholic Church in Bethel.

The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee would like to congratulate Mary Epchook of Bethel for winning the 2011 K300 Logo Contest.! Mary is originally from Kwethluk. This is the first art contest she has entered and she has no formal art training. Mary submitted three great logos this year. The 2011 winning logo was chosen by popular vote of race volunteers who attended the K300 Volunteer Party Saturday May 1st at the Bethel Lion’s Club. For her winning design, Mary received $100 and will received a complimentary t-shirt with the new logo. Merchandise with the new logo is scheduled to be first available July 4th, 2010.
QUYANA to all the artists in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta who submitted entries for the 2011 Logo Contest! 57 entries were received this year. The contest was open to all ages and skill levels. BUY A K300 MILE FOR THE 2010/2011 RACE-SEASON NOW!
The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee would like to announce the start of third year of the Annual K300 Mile Program, a promotion to sell miles along the K300 trail as a fundraising tool. Quyana to those individuals who participated in the 2009/2010 Buy a Mile Program! 91 miles were sold for the 2009/2010 race-season, raising a large sum to support the race organization.
The Mile Program is a great way for individuals to support this long-lasting community event and to help continue the tradition of sled dog racing in Alaska. The race has continued for more than 30 years largely through community support. Many other race organizations throughout the State of Alaska are suffering and continually lowering their purse, the Iditarod most notably so.By contrast, the Kuskokwim 300 has been able to maintain the same prize payout set in 1996. The Race Committee largely attributes the continued success to an outreach to a large number of businesses operating in the YK Delta who support the race and to an increase in support from individual community members through programs such as the Buy a Mile Program.
The Race Committee will sell three hundred individual miles for $100 each starting May 1st, 2010 through April 30th, 2011. Buying a mile includes 1). A membership in the race 2). A 10% discount on this years’ merchandise 3). A mile owner certificate 4). Recognition in a poster displayed in Bethel and on the K300 website and on the Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race Facebook Page. Membership in the race will be required to participate in any of the purse races sponsored by the K300 during the 2010/2011 race season, as is required by many other Dog-Mushing Associations.
The Mile Program is intended for individuals to purchase and is not intended for businesses or groups. Interested business or groups are encouraged to support the race instead by becoming a Race Sponsor.
Mile holders from the 2009/2010 race-season will have from May 1st to July 4th (when the new merchandise is scheduled to be available) to renew if they would like to keep the same mile. For a list of available miles visit www.k300.org.
To purchase K300 miles mail a check for $100 to: K300, PO Box 3001, Bethel, AK 99559.
Checks can be made out to K300. Please include the mile number, the name the mile will be purchased under, and contact information. Please contact Casie Stockdale, Race Manager, about the Mile Program or to volunteer for the race at k300@alaska.com or 907-545-3300.
Thank you for supporting the Kuskokwim 300, Alaska’s Premier Mid-Distance Sled Dog Race!

The theft case against former race manager Staci Gillilan ended last week in Bethel court when she was sentenced. She received a 2 year probationary sentence after her guilty plea, and was ordered to pay $7,500 to the race and $1,000 to a trust fund from which she also stole money, and was also ordered to write a letter of apology. If she successfully completes felony probation, she can have a clean record.
The race committee is happy to have the case completed. It took much time and effort away from putting on the race, and had the potential to end the race, as the finances were in total disarray when the theft was discovered. In two years time, the race has recovered from a $30,000 deficit and is now in great shape financially. Thank you to all who have helped the race through this difficult time.

2010 Race Week officially begins January 12-19th! The K300 race is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM, Friday January 15th, 2010, and will be immediately followed by a fireworks display.
The Alaska State troopers in Bethel have plans to monitor the Kuskokwim 300 race start and trail for drunk drivers. As in previous years, the troopers will have officers on snow machines at the start and along the trail, including the check points, to spot and arrest drunk drivers and other violators. With heavy dog team and vehicle traffic surrounding the dog race, drunk drivers pose an increased safety hazard. In recent years, The Race Committee has asked the troopers to provide patrols, and the result has been reduced drunk driving along the trail.
The National Guard will also be assisting the K300 by providing volunteers for the Start/Finish Line as well as by providing funding. The National Guard has joined us as a New Major Sponsor for the 2010 race. The Race Committee has been hoping to form a partnership with the Guard for a few years and is very grateful to have their support this year.
The Race Committee would also like to thank Alba’s Pizza for returning as a Supporting Sponsor, donated to the Race Headquarters.
The K300 Banquet and Musher Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18th. Swanson’s and AC are both returning as sponsors of the K300 Banquet, which will start a 6 PM. A number of auction items have been donated by local business and will be auctioned after the Banquet. The 2010 auction items are: a 7-day fishing trip donated by Goodnews River Lodge, a Ski-doo Tune up donated by Back Creek Marine, a tow bar donated by Shorty’s Shop, fishing/boating items donated by Anvil’s Gun Cashe/Lisa’s Party Depot, and two copies of THE KUSKOKWIM 300: A RACE LIKE NO OTHER donated by KYUK. Airline tickets have also been donated by Alaska Airlines, ERA, and PenAir and will be either auctioned at the Benefit Concert Wed. Jan. 13th or at the Banquet.

The 2010 Kuskokwim 2010 is less than 2 weeks away! The race is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM, Friday January 15th, 2010.
In a time when the K300 Race Committee would have predicted decreased support from our Sponsors, as seen with other races such as the Iditarod, the people and businesses of Bethel and the YK Delta have reach out and supported the K300 as much as ever. The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated sponsors who have recently committed Sponsorship.
We are please to announce that the YKHC Tobacco Control and Research Department has joined us as a New Supporting Sponsor. According to Wole Fadahunsi, Director of Community Health and Wellness at YKHC, “YKHC’s Nicotine Control and Research Department works to reduce any tobacco use in the YK Delta. Tobacco use is highly prevalent in our region. Coincidentally, tobacco use is one of the most important modifiable health risk factor because tobacco has been implicated in many human conditions including cancers, respiratory infections, and low birth weight infants.”
The Tobacco Control and Research Department is working with the Kuskokwim 300 to help inform the people of the YK Delta about the risk of tobacco use and what the Department is doing to help reduce tobacco use. According to Fadahunsi, “Our department is involved in prevention and control work to reduce tobacco use amongst YK Delta people. We also collaborate with reputable institutions to conduct research to generate new knowledge that help us better understand the tobacco issues in our region and develop new treatments.”
A second company also joined as a New Supporting Sponsor, Everts Air Cargo, who will be shipping straw for the race to Bethel. Shipping straw is an ever-increasing cost to the race. There are also logistical and timing issues involved with shipping the straw. The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee is very appreciative of the help we are receiving from Everts and we hope to continue this partnership in the future.
A big thank you to The Lumber Yard, who is returning as a Supporting Sponsor. The Lumber Yard joined us in 2009 and we thank you for your continued support!
The K300 Race Committee would like to invite any interested business or individual to help keep the sprit of dog mushing alive in Western Alaska. Sponsoring the K300 is not only a great was to give back to the community in which we live and work, but also is a great way to promote your business. Visit www.k300.org for more information about our sponsors.
The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee is seeking volunteers for the 2010 race. Volunteers are needed for: the K300 Benefit Concert, Start/Finish line, Head Quarters, K300 Banquet, and for food donations. To get involved as a sponsor or as a volunteer, contact Casie Stockdale, K300 Race Manager at 907-545-3300 or k300@alaska.com
