Jen Peeks pilots team to victory to score historic |
win in 2012 Bogus Creek 150 |
By Michelle DeWitt, Special to www.k300.org Bethel, AK Bethel musher Jen Peeks made Bogus Creek 150 race history today with her first-place finish. “It wasn’t expected for me to win, I think Pete and Ron (Kaiser) as well as myself just wanted a good race,” Peeks said. She said the main goal was for the dogs to do well and be healthy. “It ended up being a super fun race, winning.” Peeks said she thought second-place finisher Lewis Pavila was going to catch up with her for sure, “but my dogs did really well and I was able to pull it off.” When asked about trail conditions, Peeks shared, “The trail was good for me because my dogs aren’t trained to go super fast…they are trained for the Iditarod. So the trail conditions, the snow was sugary-like…and that helped. They do better with endurance stuff.” Peeks credited her lead dogs as well as race logistics and her competitors. “My leaders Peanut and Broc made it the entire way and they did awesome. Everything on the Bogus seemed really organized and all the teams seemed strong,” she said. Peeks, 31, is the first woman to claim the Bogus title with a total elapsed time of 17 hours, 41 minutes and 19 seconds. Peeks was a rookie in this year’s Bogus Creek but has established herself as a familiar name in Kuskokwim mushing by running several other local races over the past few years. To secure the win, Jen managed to stay ahead of musher Lewis Pavila who completed the race less than 12 minutes behind Peeks. All seven Bogus Creek mushers have completed the race with final finisher Cameron Jackson winning the red lantern by logging an elapsed time of 20 hours, 42 minutes and 6 seconds. Peeks’ win earns her a $5,000 in prize money. The Bogus Creek 150’s inaugural race was 1989 and is popular with local mushers. It was introduced in part to create more racing opportunities for Y-K Delta mushers. Previous female top finishers include 2nd place finishes by Bethel mushers Bev Hoffman in 1990 and Sarah Angstman in 1995, and 3rd place finishes in 1993 by Lori Townsend and in 2008 by Angela Denning-Barnes. Jen mushes for the 64-dog Kaiser Racing Kennel; Pete Kaiser is currently out on the K300 trail with another Kaiser Racing Kennel team. Peeks has been mushing for four years and some of the highlights of her career are racing in the Akiak Dash, Holiday Classic, Larry Chase, Spring 50 and the Camp Out Race. Her sponsors include the Kaiser Racing Kennel, Sean and Angela Denning Barnes, Sarah Angstman, Ben Kuntz, Chris Pike, Lucas Salzbrun, and Ron, Janet and Pete Kaiser. |
